Birmingham eyeing Carew as Aston Villa contract talks stall

Birmingham will monitor John Carew’s summer contract talks and be ready with a bid if they collapse.
Aston Villa favourite Carew, 30, has just 15 months left on his deal and been warned his future will stay on the back burner until the summer.
And that has cast doubts on what happens next for the Norwegian whose relationship with manager Martin O’Neill has been uneasy.
O’Neill has been frustrated by Carew’s laid back attitude, and has several times made caustic public comments about how the Villa Park crowd have adopted him as a cult figure.
And he recently warned the star, who has been troubled by niggling injuries all season, that he had to repay team-mates who have carried him.
Carew, who has scored nine goals in eight games before yesterday, said: “I only want to concentrate on playing well. I hope I can continue to be an important part of the team until the season is over because we have a big few weeks left.”
