David James is a Celtic target after Portsmouth withdrew a new deal for the England goalkeeper.
James was promised a player-coaching job at Fratton Park, but needed to take a pay-cut on his £40,000-a-week wage.
Pompey are in financial limbo, with a transfer embargo in place until October.
James, 39, believes he can play two more seasons. Celtic need to replace Artur Boruc who has joined Fiorentina.
