Jose Mourinho was reportedly begging Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to sign Didier Drogba until the last minute of the transfer window.
According to Spanish reports, the Special One wanted either the Chelsea striker or his old Inter Milan forward Samuel Eto'o to join him in La Liga, but was denied by Perez' strict stance over new recruits.
Mourinho admitted he was in the market for another attacking option, but Perez refused to budge after already splashing out on Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil.
"I am missing one more (striker), maybe one with characteristics (Gonzalo) Higuain and (Karim) Benzema don't have, " said the former Chelsea boss.
" I asked for another because I fear one of those two might get injured, and if you look to the bench you don't find many solutions.
"It is also true that unless someone else comes in, I cannot play another home match with Higuain and Benzema together, because if one of them gets injured in the 5th minute, I don't have a spare and I would have to change the entire structure of the team."
"And there is a another reason. I like it when players have lots of pressure and lots of competition for their position so they cannot relax for one moment."
