Liverpool swoop for French defender

Liverpool are set to make a surprise transfer deadline swoop for Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy.

The 25-year-old is uncapped for France and did not even make Laurent Blanc's all-new squad for the recent friendly against Norway, for which the country's shamed World Cup players were banned.

But Hodgson believes he can strengthen competition for places down a right flank which was exposed by Manchester City in Monday's 3-0 defeat.
