Manchester City could add Spanish World Cup winner Javi Martinez to their Harlem Globetrotters-style squad in January after making an enquiry for the 23-year-old.
The Athletic Bilbao star is also a target for Manchester United and Liverpool.
The central midfielder, whose play mixes creativity and positional discipline, has been compared to Xabi Alonso.
His £34million exit clause could be a sticking point even for moneybags City, although Roberto Mancini may be prepared to sacrifice Nigel de Jong in order to land Martinez.
City will be unable to run the rule over him at Wembley tomorrow as the 6-foot-3 star is injured.
