Ambitious Southampton want to lure Darius Vassell back to England after the former Villa and Manchester City striker was axed by Turkish club Ankaragucu.
Southampton manager Alan Pardew is looking for another striker to boost his squad after Saints were installed as red-hot favourites to win League One.
Vassell, capped 22 times by England, was mobbed by 3,000 ecstatic fans when he first arrived in Ankara from Manchester City a year ago but he managed only four goals in 24 matches.
Pardew wants Vassell to compete with leading scorer Rickie Lambert and Lee Barnard for a place in Southampton’s attack which last season scored more than 100 goals in all competitions.
Pardew, who has spent £1m already this summer, believes Vassell would help complete his squad. His only other striker is injury-prone Republic of Ireland international David Connolly.
