Bruce: Sol Campbell is an option for us

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has held talks with Sol Campbell – but insists the former England star is just one of his options as he bids to strengthen his defence.

Bruce said: “We had a catch up to see what his ideas are and what he is up to. It was pretty positive stuff and we will see what happens.” Thirty five-year-old Campbell is a free agent after leaving Arsenal – but Bruce also has an interest in ­Schalke’s Heiko ­Westermann and Ghana ­international John Mensah.

So far Bruce has brought in Cristian Riveros, Simon Mignolet and Ahmed Al-Muhammadi but yesterday saw Lorik Cana depart for Galatasaray.
