Tottenham’s strict wage structure is set to cost them the chance of landing Bolton and England defender Gary Cahill in January.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is a massive fan of the centre-half and tried to sign him in the summer.
The failure to do a deal then has opened the door for Chelsea, who can offer far better terms than their London rivals.
Tottenham’s best-paid stars pull in around £75,000 a week, while Chelsea’s top earners are on in excess of £150,000.
