Luiz Felipe Scolari admits losing assistant first team coach Steve Clarke to West Ham would be a blow for Chelsea.
The Blues' new boss recognises Clarke's importance as a bridge between the manager, players and the rest of the staff - not to mention the extensive knowledge Clarke has of the English game which Premier League rookie Scolari appreciates.
The Chelsea manager said: "I arrive now and they say Steve has resigned.
"Yesterday I invited Steve to my house to discuss the situation with West Ham, Chelsea and life for Steve.
"Steve is important for me, he's important for Chelsea, he's a man who is a point between me and the players, between me and the staff and he knows Chelsea very well - he knows England, the players, the clubs. Now when I hear he goes I'm sad."
