Martin O'Neill is ready to make a £6million bid for Manchester City defender Richard Dunne this week.
Aston Villa boss O’Neill wants to steal a march on rivals Sunderland and Stoke to land the Republic of Ireland international.
Dunne, 29, will be allowed to leave Eastlands by Mark Hughes for the right price and O’Neill is preparing a firm offer.
O’Neill believes Dunne can provide the leadership qualities he desperately needs after the retirement of Martin Laursen.
Villa are also closing in on a deal for Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock and want Portsmouth centre-half Sylvain Distin.
