The Wigan squad have donated £1million from their Premier League bonus to help build a youth club.
The money is a huge chunk of the £6m needed to finish the project – to be known as the Youth Zone.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, cranes tycoon Martin Ainscough and his cousin, house builder Bill Ainscough will put up the rest of the cash.
Latics captain Gary Caldwell said the players were all behind the decision.
He added: “The scheme is fantastic and we’re delighted to contribute.”
Whelan was stunned by the players’ generosity.
“As far as I’m aware, no other team has donated to charity in the same way," he said. "The local council’s chief executive could not believe it.”
The Youth Zone will offer sports, music and art to eight to 19-year-olds.
