Stephen Hunt's third goal of the campaign gave Wolves a half-time lead in the derby with Stoke at Molineux.
Hunt converted a penalty after Jonathan Woodgate brought down Wolves winger Matt Jarvis.
The out-of-sorts Woodgate was substituted after only 19 minutes of a half of few goalscoring opportunities.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was forced to make two changes from the side beaten 4-1 by Manchester United for the home Barclays Premier League clash with Stoke.
Midfielders Jamie O'Hara (calf) and Dave Edwards (groin) were both ruled out and replaced by Nenad Milijas and Stephen Hunt respectively.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis kept faith with the side which defeated Tottenham 2-1 in their last league outing after making 11 changes for the midweek Europa League encounter in Besiktas.
Wolves made a promising start and Matt Jarvis made a good run down the left only for his cross to be cut out by Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross.
The first effort at goal came from Wolves full-back Ronald Zubar following another Jarvis centre but his shot curled just wide.
Stoke won three early throws but Wolves dealt competently with the long balls propelled into their box by Ryan Shotton.
Peter Crouch flicked on a fourth long throw by Shotton inside the first eight minutes but Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was able to collect.
Stoke defender Jonathan Woodgate became the first player to be yellow-carded, for bringing down Jarvis in full flight.
The game was of a stop-start nature with little flow to the football in the early stages.
But after 16 minutes the recalled Hunt put Wolves ahead from the penalty spot.
Woodgate could have few complaints after chopping down dangerman Jarvis inside the box, although he escaped a second yellow card.
Up stepped Hunt to drill the spot-kick past Thomas Sorensen even though the goalkeeper dived the right way.
Pulis decided a tactical change was needed and after 19 minutes replaced the booked Woodgate with Jermaine Pennant, which allowed Shotton to drop back from the right-wing to right-back.
Kevin Doyle was able to deliver a probing centre after finding himself in plenty of space on the right flank but Hunt's first touch was too heavy inside the danger area.
Stoke won their first corner after 27 minutes but Matthew Etherington's centre was dealt with by Wolves centre-back Christophe Berra.
The visitors started to get a foothold in the game with Etherington seeing more of the ball on the left.
Hunt should have done better for Wolves when he headed too fiercely back across goal from a Jarvis cross with two players unmarked in the centre.
But the Republic of Ireland international then forced Sorensen to block his low drive from a narrow angle with his feet.
Hunt tried to capitalise on the rebound but his cross was cut out by Sorensen.
Jarvis switched to the right flank in place of Hunt but continued to cause problems.
Stoke had a decent chance with Etherington after Crouch dummied a centre from Shotton, but the winger failed to make a full contact on his shot which Hennessey collected.
