Alan Curbishley is in pole position to get the Wolves job after talks - but rival Steve Bruce will now get the chance to stake his claim.
Former Charlton and West Ham boss Curbishley is desperate to get back into Premier League management for the first since since 2008.
He has wasted little time securing an interview with the Premier League strugglers, who sacked boss Mick McCarthy on Monday.
Curbs, 54, outlined his vision for establishing Wanderers in the top flight after three seasons fighting the drop under McCarthy.
But he faces competition from ex-Sunderland and Birmingham chief Bruce, who is willing to take the Molineux post on a short-term basis for the remaining 13 games.
Bruce is due to meet Wolves' owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey in London on Friday.
