Wolves fans demand refund after Old Trafford shambles

Wolves fans have bombarded the club, demanding a refund after Tuesday’s Old Trafford shambles.

Manager Mick McCarthy changed all 10 outfield players - and then watched them lose 3-0 to Manchester United.

Now many of the 3,000 travelling fans - who chanted “forty-two quid to watch the reserves” – want their ticket money paid back by the club and are prepared to go to Trading Standards to get it.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards said that there could be a case to answer under ‘not supplying goods fit for purpose or as advertised’.

Fans who lodged a complaint yesterday were sent forms to make their grievance official and the spokesperson added: “The more fans who complain, the stronger their case will be.”

But Wolves were last night standing firm and refusing to pay out, backing McCarthy’s long-term decision, as he wants his strongest team rested for Sunday’s crunch visit of Burnley.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “There are no plans to refund the £42 that fans were chanting.

“I can understand why our fans were unhappy.

“But we are taking the Premier League very seriously and it’s our over-riding ambition to stay in the division this season and consolidate.”

The Premier League board have written to Wanderers as rules stipulate teams must field their strongest line-ups where possible.

Only keeper Marcus Hahnemann remained from the side who won 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Moxey added: “We have a squad system at the club and Mick picked what he thought was the best side for that match.

“We have also had a large amount of injuries recently, Michael Kightly is out and we have lost Andy Keogh.

“The season is a marathon not a sprint and Mick’s job is to keep us in the Premier League.”

Wolves’ record-scorer Steve Bull, who netted 306 goals for the club, said: “I was disappointed when I saw the team, just like the other 3,000 Wolves fans there.

“But deep down I think realism comes to mind when you’ve got Burnley on Sunday so you’d rather field a very strong side there.

“As fans you have to bite your lip some days.”
