Why Didier Drogba should avoid ref Damon like a kick in the swingers
Didier Drogba should not expect any favours should he come across South African referee Jerome Damon.
Damon, who is the only homegrown whistleblower amongst the 30 selected for the tournament, has revealed that his most painful moment in football came at the hands – or rather the feet – of Chelsea’s Ivory Coast striker.
Damon recalled: “It was a game between the Ivory Coast and Sudan in a World Cup qualifier in 2005.
“I was not well positioned and Didier Drogba took a shot at goal and the ball struck me in my family jewels.
“I just smiled and continued, although I was in great pain.
“I just told myself that whatever I do, I wouldn’t fall down.”
