An Arsenal win? You couldn't find a worse bet with an A-Z
Today is the day when teams with real European pedigree start dreaming of another Champions League triumph or, as Arsenal call it, Wednesday.
Arsenal are 1-6 to beat AZ in the Champions League tonight and it would be hard to find a worse bet, even with an A-Z.
AZ, you see, are managed by a certain Ronald Koeman, who as a coach has never lost to an Arsene Wenger side in five previous meetings. It would be stretching a point to say that Wenger in Europe has become Ronnie's b*tch but, as it will definitely get up Arsenal noses, I'll say it anyway.
There's something about Koeman's pumpkin-sized face that brings out the worst in Wenger. It's as though Wenger sold his soul to the devil for that 'invincibles' season and Koeman is the devil come around to collect.
By rights AZ Alkmaar shouldn't be in Arsenal's league. By rights Arsenal should be in the French League. But I'd want a working man's price before I even considered backing Gunners to beat a Koeman team and 1-6 definitely ain't a working man's price.
Romanian champions Unirea, who won 4-1 in Glasgow a fortnight ago, are evens to beat Rangers, which would be a working man's price except there are no working men in Romania. Or Scotland.
