What are the odds King Eric becomes Monsieur President? Derek McGovern's Bets of the Day

Eric Cantona is 100-1 to be the next French president after declaring his intention to run.

Dimitar Berbatov is expected to wait until next season before declaring his intention to run.

The French elections are in April and, as a former Manchester United star, Cantona is always at his strongest at that stage of the campaign.

Cantona hopes to unseat pint-sized president Nicolas Sarkozy via the ballot box after his attempted kung-fu kick went over his head.

“We cannot be entirely happy seeing such misery around us,” said Cantona recently. I think it was at an Aston Villa game.

He will not be the first footballer to try his hand at improving the lot of his people.

George Weah has regularly done his bit for Liberians and Andy Carroll once bedded two librarians, though he had to take them back after two weeks.

In England, Stephen Fry has been named the man people would most like to see as PM. That was according to a survey of Liberal-Democrat MPs.

He’s 1,000-1 with Hills to become Prime Minister in the next 20 years.

As is Nick Clegg.

Roger Federer's 17-match indoor winning streak suggests one thing – he really shouldn’t go out so much.

Fed claimed titles in quick succession at the end of last season in Basel, Paris and London, proving that when he’s indoors he’s ruthless.

But when the venue is roofless he comes up short. That’s why Hills offer 8-13 that he doesn’t win a Grand Slam title this year.

The 30-year-old father of two finished 2011 so strongly mainly because the world’s best players – plus Andy Murray – were showing signs of fatigue and illness.

Frankly we’re all sick and tired of millionaires complaining about playing too much tennis. The only thing that stops me playing tennis every day are court fees.

Fed is setting his sights this year on a London treble: Wimbledon, the Olympics and the World Tour Championships.

If he’s in London that often he’ll need to win all three of those titles to stay solvent.

Money doesn’t go far in the capital these days and, if you’ve got none, neither do the birds.

Hills offer 50-1 for Fed to complete a London treble and a more realistic 5-1 that he finishes 2012 as the world’s No.1 player.

It’s just 8-13 for the four 2012 Slams to be won by the Big Four. Yes, Murray is included in that.

There’s a growing feeling in the Murray camp that he will break his duck soon.

Girlfriend Kim must be running out of excuses by now.

Scotland is very unlikely to gain independence.

It would mean the Scots saying goodbye to the pound and joining the euro – and I’ve yet to meet a Scot who parts with a pound without a fight.

Even the Inland Revenue are offering Scottish taxpayers (there may be some) 25 per cent discount for cash.

On the bright side, it might be Scotland’s only hope of making the Euros.

Scottish Nationalist leader Alex Salmond wants to conduct the poll in 2014 to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the bloody Battle of Bannockburn, which Scotland won 3-0.

In an ideal world, Salmond would want to re-enact that battle.

Hills quote 7-1 for the Scots to be independent by 2020. They are about 1-3 to be indedoldrums.

A referendum in 2014 is a 4-5 chance.
