Why I'm looking forward to visiting old school Turf Moor with Wigan this weekend
This Saturday see’s an anticipated - or perhaps un-anticipated - trip across to East Lancashire to face our old friends Burnley for the very first time in the English top flight. Burnley have made a fantastic start to the season if only at home, they have shown that they can comfortable battle in this league whilst picking up points along the way. They’re unbeaten home record is impressive as is the footballing philosophy that Owen Coyle has instilled in to his side. Much like Wigan Athletic, Burnley are a side who dedicate their game plan to a decent standard of football and won’t alter that despite the opposition so purists should expect a decent game on Saturday.
Burnley are coming off the back of a demoralising defeat against hated local rivals Blackburn Rovers, whilst the Latics have taken a point from Man City last time out. Both teams will be in desperate need of a win, Burnley to keep they’re un-beaten home record intact and Wigan to prove their poor away record isn’t here to stay.
In terms of team news two of our most important players are rated as 50-50 for the game, both Paul Scharner and Chris Kirkland could be the ones who miss out with Jordi Gomez and Mike Pollit the one’s most likely to step up.
This game will be difficult, no doubt about it but equally it’s a game where we should be looking to pick up all three points to push on with Roberto’s revolution at Wigan.
From a personal point of view I’m looking forward to returning to the old school atmosphere of Turf Moor, its cold, its dark, it’s horrible but most of all its real.
Bring it on!
Prediction: 1 – 1
