Domenech vs Carlos Alberto and the top five grudge handshakes - video special

So the France are out of the World Cup after losing to a South Africa side who had a right good go at them, but just couldn't score enough to seal their own qualification for the next round.

France 1-2 South Africa: French toast, hosts exit too

So would hapless France coach Raymond Domenech take defeat with good grace? Not on your nellie.

Instead the man who has spent the entire campaign involved in petty squabbles within his own squad finally turned on someone from outside the France camp and refused to shake the hand of South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira at the final whistle.

The Bafana Bafana boss approached Domenech with arm outstretched only for the Frenchman to turn away and waggle his finger.

Of course, the former France boss (as we'll be calling him after today) is not the first manager to get in a tizz over shaking his opponents hand. Here are some previous examples of the traditional post-match ritual going awry.

First up, another Frenchman getting stroppy. This time it's Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who leaves Alan Pardew hanging when the then West Ham manager proffers his hand. In a touching show of loyalty for his boss, Pat Rice then follows suit, and even goes as far as folding his arms to escape Pards' attentions.

Another Frenchman involved in our next clip too (is there a pattern emerging here?) when Patrick Vieira and Gary Neville do partake in the actual handshake, but Nev throws in a menacing glare after the Gunners captain and the United defender had been involved in a bit of pushing and shoving in the tunnel at Old Trafford one year. Well, it's a close as Gary can get to a menacing stare. Bless 'im. Oh if looks could kill, Pat would have a nasty headache etc and so on.

If he really had his wits about him, Raymond could have made his opposite number look like a right old berk by giving him this classic move which a cheeky young Chelsea mascot pulled on Steve Gerrard - and watch out for the little wink at the end. Take that Stevie! Zing!

...And some Manchester United fans finally got Roberto Mancini to crack a smile when they pulled out the same move on him at Old Trafford.

Perhaps the most famous handshake that never was, took place at Stamford Bridge in February after details emerged about John Terry's alleged affair with Wayne Bridge's ex-missus Vanessa Perroncel. Just to add spice to the story, Bridgey's new team Manchester City were due to play Chelsea shortly after the story broke. Would Bridge shake his erstwhile best mate's hand? Find out in the clip below.
