Top 10 things we learned from Switzerland 1-3 England
England continued their impressive start to the Euro 2012 campaign with a 3-1 win over Switzerland in Basel . But what did we learn, asks Dan Silver?
1) Matthew Upson's England career is surely over. Despite being England's joint top scorer at the World Cup (ahem), he was overlooked on Friday against Bulgaria and didn't make the bench in Switzerland. We're bet he's glad he made the trip - let's hope he likes Toblerone...
2) England enjoyed a great start but you had to feel for Coleen Rooney. Wayne had only been out of the country for 12 minutes before he scored again... We think it was the first time he's scored in an English shirt for a year - although only Jennifer Thompson knows for certain.
3) 'I told you my boy would get a goal!' Tweeted @rioferdy5 following England's opener. Rio backing Rooney score? Well, he wasn't wong that night at the 235 Casino in Manchester either.
4) Jermain Defoe should have had his second England hat-trick in the space of four days before eventually going off injured. His finishing in front of goal was so bad, though, that he wouldn't have scored in the Lowry with £1200.
5) The Swiss are rightly proud of their neutrality, but you'd think they'd have let their football team attack in the first half. They embodied the stereotype so surely in the first 45 minutes, it was a shock they were allowed to changed sides for the second.
6) The introduction of Adam Johnson for Walcott meant that there were FIVE players from Eastlands representing England for the majority of the game (and SIX when Shaun-Wright Phillips replaced Rooney). 'It's just like watching City!' said one Blues fan on @mirrorfootball's Twitter feed. 'No it's not- England are winning away from home for a start...' replied another. Rumours have it that Fabio's being fitted for a lucky scarf even as we speak.
7) It was no surprise England's opponents started playing once their were two goals and one man down. If there's one nation you don't want to leave with a mountain to climb, it's the Swiss...
8) Joe Hart is human after all. After starting the season like a man possessed by the spirit of Gordon Banks, he spent 15 second-half minutes playing like Robert Green's less-coordinated brother. Still, at least he's got it out of his system now. We hope!
9) You could tell from the way Swiss sub Shaqiri shaped to shoot that he'd find the back of the night. After all, those hips don't lie...
10) Fabio finally cracked a smile following Darren Bent's goal but there will have been some very unhappy viewers back home: Arsene Wenger watching Theo Walcott get sent to hospital for a scan, Harry Redknapp watching Jermain Defoe being carried to the dressing room on a stretcher, or Frank Lampard watching his chances of making it back into the England midfield disappear into thin air.
