Manchester United and Chelsea to battle for David Villa, Matthew Upson to Liverpool and the rest of Sunday's transfer gossip

Manchester United are on the trail of Ajax's Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez . The Old Trafford giants are prepared to pay around £35m for the 22-year-old. (The Sunday Times)

United, meanwhile, face competition for another of their striking targets, Valencia's David Villa . Chelsea are preparing a £25m bid for the Spanish ace as they expect to overturn their transfer ban. (News of the World)

But United are determined to win the race for Villa and they also want his team-mate, midfielder David Silva . They are lining up a £40m bid for the pair. (Sunday Mirror)

Cash-strapped West Ham are ready to listen to offers for defender Matthew Upson in the January transfer window. They value the England star at £15m. (Sunday Mirror)

Liverpool are favourites to land Upson and that could help the Hammers fund a deal to sign Bordeaux's Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh . (News of the World)

Meanwhile, Liverpool will sell Ryan Babel to Ajax if they get £6m for the Dutch striker. They will use the money to help fund a new deal for keeper Pepe Reina. (News of the World)
