How the 1920s Rams rubbed salt in their own wounds

Football treasure unearthed by Derek Hammond & Gary Silke...

Thanks go out to Rams programme collector Paul Duffin of Alfreton for sending in one of the oldest issues in his collection of over 3,000… and counting.

“Played on 27 October 1928 in front of a crowd of only 13,091,” he puts us in the picture, “the Rams won this match 4-0, with a hat-trick from Harry Bedford – who scored 27 goals in 30 appearances in this season 80 years ago. And this was just one of the 10 hat-tricks he scored for the club.”

Flicking through the reference books covering his museum piece’s era, Paul reports that this season saw County finish creditably at the pointy end of the First Division.

1 - Sheffield Wednesday 52 pts
2 - Leicester City 52
3 - Aston Villa 50
4 - Sunderland 47
5 - Liverpool 46
6 - Derby County 46

But enough of all this football talk. We’re off to hear some All-New Electrical Recordings at Tomlinson’s on Osmaston Road.

Anything to save us dwelling on the programme cover, and how very close the Rams came to glory in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals seven years out of nine between 1896 and 1904… a misfortune only underlined by double-counting semi-final and final appearances in the years they went on to lose at Wembley!
