The impossible job is so big it needs to be shared and a pairing of Becks and Harry makes great sense
Everyone knows what Harry Redknapp’s attributes are.
Everyone knows that he is a football alchemist with a keen eye for talent and a gift for getting the best out of good players.
The changes he has wrought at Spurs in the two years he has been in charge, the style of football they are playing, has made him the obvious choice to take over from Fabio Capello next year.
So the real question about the bold plan to breathe new life into the management of the England team is how does it work between Harry and David Beckham.
The two men are hardly strangers: they share an East End background, a love of attractive football and an obsession with the game.
Redknapp would want to bring his trusted lieutenants Kevin Bond and Joe Jordan into the England set-up. And it is obvious that Beckham would act as the apprentice to Redknapp’s master motivator. But the move to pair Beckham with Redknapp and his backroom team makes great sense.
This is the England job, don’t forget.
The impossible job. The job that is still bigger than any other club job.
It brings more pressure, more scrutiny, more demands.
It is a load that needs to be shared.
And over the last several years, Beckham has become as adept a diplomat as English sport has to offer.
Bond and Jordan are both excellent coaches, but Beckham will also bring the kind of international stature that would be useful to Redknapp in the England job.
For a man once known to be impetuous and rash as a player, Beckham would be a calming influence in what can often be a tempestuous atmosphere.
He would be Redknapp’s link to the dressing room, a senior figure who would command the respect of younger players because of everything he has achieved in the game.
Beckham has won the Champions League and league titles in England and Spain. He has also played in three World Cups.
For too long, England has neglected the experience of players like him when it comes to seeking their influence for the national team.
Beckham may have said in the past that he would prefer not to go into management, but this is different.
This is England.
This is a chance everyone hopes he will not turn down.
This is an opportunity to put England back on the right track.
