Homeless World Cup Blog 1: We need your help
An England team are still in the hunt for footballing glory this year - with the Homeless World Cup - the tournament in which new Manchester United signing Bebe first came to prominence.
In his new exclusive blog for MirrorFootball.co.uk, team manager Richard Brown will be providing a regular behind-the-scenes report on the run-up to the September event in Brazil.
The England Homeless World Cup squad's preparations for the 8th Homeless World Cup are well underway, and we now have a working squad of 10 players.
The tournament itself follows the rules of street football, and is four-a-side. Fast football with lots of goals. The England team are currently ranked 10th and we hope we can get to higher up the rankings. However the hosts, Brazil, may have something to say about that, as will current holders Ukraine.
This year’s tournament in Brazil and the week of football represents the climax of the year long programme that we have been engaged in. This year we had over 500 people register for the trails that started back in January.
We have a training session on the 30th July before we meet up for the final session in August, when we will announce the team. The squad are looking pretty strong again, however where we have all heard that before?
One of our current challenges is the funding required for the programme, particularly in the current economic climate. We are currently £15,000 short and will be taking part in a number of events to secure this. The England Homeless World Cup manager will be taking part in a sponsored walk up Snowdon in August, and further details of this will be available in a couple of weeks.
If you want to make a donation then this can either be done online or send a cheque to The England Homeless World Cup, 50 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. L3 5SD.
