Niall Quinn must rethink this Sunderland fan ban
Back in August we heard from Sunderland fans who felt they’d been treated extremely unfairly at Newcastle’s Central Station.
On returning from a friendly with Hearts they were met by police and four fans ended up in hospital with serious head injuries.
No police officers were hurt but a coordinated police PR campaign branded fans yobs and hooligans.
At the time we contacted Sunderland who said they were keen to stay out and remain impartial. Fair enough, they have to maintain good relations with the police.
However, three months down the line and no fans have been charged yet Sunderland has now taken the decision to ban fans who were there.
If people are violent ban them, we agree. But fans are being branded guilty until proven innocent and have had no opportunity to defend themselves.
It’s an increasing trend and something which should concern all supporters – next time it could be you.
Sunderland fans have started a petition appealing on chairman Niall Quinn to overturn the unfair decision.
