Sol Campbell to Manchester United - how I broke the story, by James Nursey

By James Nursey

When I told one of my pals last night that Manchester United were interested in Sol Campbell, his reaction was disbelief.

Most people, myself included, were until recently expecting Campbell to go to Championship Newcastle once Notts County release his registration as agreed.

But then I explained to my friend what I had heard and from whom, and my pal was last seen heading for a bookies.

The story started to get legs after I received a text on Monday night from a former professional player still involved in the game saying he'd heard Campbell was heading to United soon to start training with them.

The text suggested I call him when he duly explained where his information came from and that Newcastle's management were expecting Campbell to go to United.

This particular source has given me numerous transfer stories in the past like Fabian Delph going to Aston Villa and Niko Kranjcar joining Spurs so I had no reason to doubt him.

And once a member of Campbell's entourage reluctantly admitted on Tuesday that there was indeed interest from Sir Alex Ferguson, then we decided to run the story.

Now I am not saying Campbell will definitely rock up at Old Trafford on January 1 but it is a definite possibilty and good luck to him.
