Sunderland Premier League preview: Fan's eye view
By Scott Bentley
1) Have you got over your World Cup blues?
Yes, in five nanoseconds. Was it really any great suprise that the "Golden Generation" of underachievers failed to deliver yet again? If we want to improve in the future, we need to start looking beyond blaming the jabulani, playing too many games or being bored in luxury hotels!
2) Are you happy with your squad?
On the whole, yes. The disappointment of losing the potentially strong leadership qualities of Lorik Cana has hopefully been mitigated by the capture of World Cup quarter finalist Cristian Riveros. We now seem to have reasonable competition in most positions, although bringing in a quality, recognized left-back is something we must resolve.
3)
Who will be your key player this season and why?
Darren Bent. If he can repeat his scoring feats of last season, it would provide a robust foundation on which to achieve the moderate success we crave.
4)
Realistically, what would be a good season for your club?
Last season's 13th place finish was achieved despite a three-month, mid-season winless run. With a little bit of tinkering, there's no reason why we could look a little higher this year. A top-half finish within touching distance of Europe will be adequate progress.
5) Which opposing player will you hate the most and why?
Joey Barton Convicted twice on charges of violence and jailed. Not to mention stubbing out a cigar on to the eyes of a reserve team player resulting in permanent scarring for the victim. People like this should not be allowed to mar out beautiful game.
