Fears grow over Pires' eyesight after Villa move, plus Avram Grant's relaxed attitude to West Ham's plight

Fears are growing for Robert Pires’ eyesight after he joined Aston Villa.

In May the veteran turned down a move to Philadelphia’s MLS club saying: “I don’t want to be fussy but if I have to go far away with my family, I prefer to do it in a beautiful town.”

Former Aston Villa boss Greasy John Gregory has popped up on auction site Ebay attempting to sell the V1LLA numberplate he bought for £44,000 a decade ago.

Alas there were no takers for the plate, which brought Gregory so much luck at Villa Park - shortly after he bought it, then-chairman Deadly Doug Ellis crashed his Rolls into the back of his manager’s Range Rover and Gregory left for Derby in 2002.

But happily Gregory appears to be making a tidy profit from his online trading. A quick persual of his recent activity reveals he has sold a nice pair of golf slacks and bought a pack of Star Wars Darth Vader Party Rings for cupcakes.

West Ham are adrift at the bottom but manager Avram Grant seems relaxed about the situation.

Staff at the Hammers’ training ground report that the Israeli likes an afternoon nap and has been spotted ‘resting his eyes’ in his office on a couple of occasions this season, accompanied by the sound of gentle snoring...
