Was Fergie bluffing about staying on for three more years?

Buried beneath the fall-out from Wayne Rooney’s punishment and the jaw-dropping loss to Blackburn was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assertion that he would have three more years at Manchester United.

Not quite as definitive as when he announced that the 2001-02 season would be his last — a declaration he reflects on as ‘an absolute disaster’ — but a timescale on his reign all the same.

Unless, of course, it is a smokescreen. Unless, of course, Sir Alex knows only too well, he will be out before then.

Just a thought.

I know goalkeepers have their own code of honour but – in an age when celebrations are painfully over-the-top – Tim Howard’s dignified reaction to his goal against Bolton was one of the more refreshing moments of the season.
