Everton fans must not let their anti-Kenwright protests affect the team
Bill Kenwright is great at putting on a show and dazzling people.
As one of the country's leading impresarios, you would expect nothing else.
But he has his work cut out trying to impress the Blue Union Everton fans group.
Kenwright has tried to quell their growing opposition to his stewardship, claiming manager David Moyes will finally be given some money to spend in the January transfer window.
"We are talking about January and there will not be a lot of money compared to what other clubs are spending on centre-forwards, but there will be money," said the Blues chief. "There will be investment in January."
Kenwright claims he wants the same thing as the Blue Union - to see new rich owners come in and make Everton competitive with the Premier League's big boys.
He says he is talking to "three or four interested parties", but that these things take time.
Kenwright insists he will find Everton a backer
His comments are unlikely to placate the several hundred Evertonians who marched on Goodison Park before Saturday's much-needed win over Wolves.
They have called for Kenwright to step down as chairman and for a new board to oversee the sale of the club.
They are determined to achieve their goal and Saturday's latest demonstration shows they are not going to go away.
So far, they are striking the right balance between opposing Kenwright, but supporting David Moyes and his team.
Several carried banners on Saturday, stating 'In Moyes we trust' and they just want the Blues boss to be given the tools to do his job to the best of his ability.
These fans only need look at the campaign by Blackburn fans to drive out Steve Kean to see how some well-intentioned stunts can backfire.
Their hiring of a plane to tow a 'Steve Kean out' banner over Ewood Park during their last home game only succeeding in demoralising the players at a key moment in the match.
As Kenwright acknowledges, the fans have the right to protest. They pay their money and clock up the miles following Everton all over the country.
But they must not let their protests affect the team. Everton are in a difficult place at present and Moyes and his players need the fans support to get their faltering campaign up and running again.
The members of the Blue Union know that and they must ensure their campaign against Kenwright does not affect the team.
