Wigan and Martinez are an example to the rest of the Premier League

It's always the way in today's world that if a small team defeats a big team, the headlines are all about the big team losing.

Tuesday was another example and it was all about Liverpool slumping to their ninth league defeat and not so much about Wigan achieving a historic first league win over the Reds.

That's a shame because Roberto Martinez and his players deserve huge credit for their victory over Liverpool - to add to their success this season over Chelsea.

They say if it ain't broke don't fix it, but Martinez still decided to rebuild the team he inherited from Steve Bruce because he wanted them to play more football.

It was a risky tactic and results such as their 9-1 hammering at Tottenham were a consequence as he bedded his new team in.

But Martinez is clearly making progress and the great thing is that his side played football to beat Liverpool.

It wasn't some mugging like you would expect from Stoke or Blackburn. The Latics play the game the right way.

Martinez is an example to other managers in the League that you can play football and survive.
