Michael Carrick faces a battle to regain his former status as one of the first names on the team-sheet

Michael Carrick's continued omission from Manchester United's first-team is a stark reminder of what can happen to a player if they fall below the formidable standard expected at Old Trafford.

In three seasons at United, Carrick has known nothing but success. He has won three Premier League titles, one European Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup, and commanded a regular first-team place with his impressive vision and long-range passing ability.

But Carrick has found himself marginalised in recent games, coming on as an injury-time substitute in the Manchester derby and for just nine minutes in the weekend's 2-0 win at Stoke.

In United's last three Premier League games, Carrick has played 38 minutes, and only came on as a 62nd minute sub in the 3-1 win at Tottenham following the dismissal of Paul Scholes.

Fergie has insisted he has not fallen out with Carrick, and that the midfielder will get his chance this season. But the 28-year-old has clearly fallen out of favour with Fergie and faces a battle to regain his former status as one of the first names on the United team-sheet.
