When clubs spend millions on players, why can't they also invest in undersoil heating to beat big freezes?

You can almost bet that some Boxing Day fixtures are going to be called off before Father Christmas has even had chance to come down the chimney.

In this day and age, for games to be called off in such a widespread fashion as they were last Saturday defies belief.

And what's even worse is that some Premier League clubs have not even got under soil heating. They can buy players for millions and yet not spend the £200,000 required to keep the pitch they play on in good shape.

I'm not saying it was great football, but I can still remember Arsenal losing at York City in the FA Cup in the 1980s on an ice rink of a pitch.

Games like that had a certain charm. It's not about us being softies these days. It's about time having moved on and with technology and money coming out of chairmens' ears, it's incredible some clubs are still way behind.
