If Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano want to leave Liverpool, Hodgson won't be able to stop them going

Roy Hodgson is a good, sensible appointment for Liverpool.

I’ve spent a lot of time in his company working for the BBC at this World Cup. He comes across as a nice guy, very relaxed. But you wouldn’t want to cross him, believe me.

With the club still in a turbulent state, Hodgson is a good person to have. A steady hand and also someone with wide experience from working across different countries, different players and has a good track record.

The other question is whether he can keep the big names, like Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano.

But if the players have made up their mind to leave then there’s very little any manager – let alone Hodgson – can do to keep them.
