Why Landon Donovan is my top January signing, plus Frank Lampard and Sol Campbell

Michael Ballack was a great player for Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Germany.

But the ageing midfielder is now over the other side of the hill, on the way down and it’s all about the future with Michael Essien.

However, Frank Lampard just carries on defying age - and just when you think he may be on the way down, he enjoys a purple patch like he has for the past month. An amazing player.

From one old centre half to another, Sol Campbell was Arsenal’s best player at Stoke in the FA Cup last Sunday.

People talk about Stoke’s second and third goals being his fault. No way. They weren’t down to Sol. They were good, well worked goals.

It’s a different test against Wayne Rooney but Campbell has the experience and knowledge to play him well even if Thomas Vermaelen doesn’t make it.

Landon Donovan has been the best signing of the January transfer window so far.

If Everton went and chased him then it was a master stroke on David Moyes’ and Everton’s part. If it wasn’t then Moyes was right to snap him up when Donovan came calling from the MLS.

Donovan is neat, tidy, disciplined and has come in and coincided with Everton’s season turning completely around. That’s no coincidence.

It is also a huge boost for the US with the World Cup coming up.
