I last saw Steven Gerrard on the team bus, waiting to leave Bloemfontein.
He was on the back seat, leaning forward, with his head in his hands.
He seemed a tortured soul, a man at the crossroads.
The emotional pull, to remain at Anfield as part of the Roy Hodgson era, will be immense.
But it should be resisted.
He deserves a chance to reinvent himself, at Real Madrid.
