Liverpool fans might not have time for George Gillett Jr, but they will like what he has to say about Manchester United

In a series of exchanges with a fans’ representative that won’t exactly have made reassuring reading for Liverpool supporters, club co-owner George Gillett Jr did at least give more credence to something that has been worrying Manchester United followers, too.

Bullish about Liverpool’s financial situation, he pointed out that he and fellow owner Tom Hicks had made the £30m from the sale of Xabi Alonso available to Rafa Benitez.

“We didn’t do like Man U did,” Gillett said. “They took all the money they got from player sales and they owed so much money, they had to use it to pay down the debt.”

Maybe you would expect one of the men in charge of Liverpool to level that kind of allegation at the charming band of Glazer brothers who run the club.

But until Sir Alex Ferguson is allowed to spend at least some of the £80m United got from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, Gillett’s words will ring like alarm bells at Old Trafford.
