Shearer's warning for Newcastle, and TV bosses shaft the Toon Army with a Monday night kick-off for Plymouth away

In his astute, under the radar way, try not to be too controversial type of way, Alan Shearer made the most telling point of the weekend.

No doubt he was well aware of the capacity to get carried away after Newcastle’s 6-1 victory.

So during Match of the Day, analysing newly promoted Wolves’ struggles this season he made a point that should be pinned up around St James’ Park this summer.

“Wolves scored for fun in the Championship last season, they got 80, but can’t seem to do it this season. It is a completely different league,” warned Shearer. Wolves have just 21 goals in 28 games.

If Shearer indeed as making some kind of indirect comment on his former club... point duly noted, and understood.

Once again supporters get shafted while the interests of football’s television paymasters over-ride any human considerations.

What else could be the explanation for rescheduling Newcastle’s 840 mile round trip to Plymouth for a.... wait for it, 7.45pm kick of on a Monday night.

Sod the needs of the Toon Army, who may want to be there in a game that could see the Geordies’ clinch promotion on April 19, but could now find the logistics impossible.

It will cost the Newcastle fans extra cash, extra days off work, overnight stays and inconvenience, but I have a sneaky feeling if it is the decisive match of their season, the black and white shirts will still be their in hordes.

Sorry Mike, but four months of quiet progress does not mean Geordies are ready to bow down and hail chief Ashley
