Birmingham's new owner Carson Yeung should have spent first, and spoken second

Carson Yeung's claim on his arrival at Birmingham that he is willing to spend £20-£40million on new players in January left me staggered.

How many times have we heard other new owners arrive at clubs making similar outlandish statements only to end up disappointing fans?

It is far better to keep supporters’ expectations in check and deliver more than you promise.

Yet now Yeung has also ensured other clubs will demand top dollar from Brum in the transfer window.

Yeung seems to be another clown in the mould of Sulaiman Al Fahim at Portsmouth.

Neither of them appear capable of keeping their gob shut, rather than alerting all and sundry there is going to be a potential windfall coming the manager’s way.

Now a player with a valuation of £5-8m will probably carry a £12m price tag for City in the New Year.

I wish Brum boss Alex McLeish good luck working with the new regime - it is certainly going to be interesting.
