Even as an Aston Villa fan I hope Birmingham thrive under Alex McLeish

Alex McLeish was rightfully buzzing after Birmingham’s fine win over Sunderland.

And we had a nice bit of banter when he came on my talkSport phone-in following the victory.

In the past I have been been critical of McLeish fielding a 4-5-1 formation - particularly for home games.

But the Scot fronted up to speak to me after Brum’s victory and hopefully another of my sparring partners, Steve Bruce, will do likewise soon.

McLeish and I just talked football and he joked that I would be glad to know he played two upfront against the Black Cats.

City’s performance in the 2-1 win was by all accounts excellent and I just hope now that Alex gets his hands on some serious funds from new owner Carson Yeung.

I know he wants to add more attacking fair to Birmingham City.

And I for one, although I am an Aston Villa fan, wouldn’t be sad to see Birmingham go from strength to strength under McLeish.

I think an attacking midfielder and new striker is an absolute must in the window.

Birmingham have consistently struggled to score more than one goal in matches over a period of time and it is an area they must address as a priority.
