Beckham was having a scarf with his green and gold stunt

Manchester United's destruction of AC Milan in the Champions League should have been the main focus last week but trust David Beckham to hog the limelight - again.

I regard Beckham as the master headline grabber and football politician.

So I can’t take seriously his claim that the only reason he put on a green and yellow scarf at Old Trafford was because it was the colours of the old Manchester United.

That’s got to be a complete load of rubbish.

Becks would have known all about the growing momentum of United supporters against the Glazers and their protest with the scarves.

So I just wonder whether Beckham’s actions were anything to do with Wayne Rooney's brilliant display.

The in-form England striker showed just why he is the current king of Old Trafford by notching four goals in United’s 7-2 two-legged win.

And perhaps David just couldn’t quite let that go without letting people know who is still the most saleable asset in football.

It should have been about Rooney and United’s awesome display, but it was about Goldenballs at the end.

Nevertheless, Rooney is hurtling towards being the world’s best player.

And United could well end this season with another Premier League and Champions League double.

I didn’t think it would happen on the back of Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo leaving last summer.

I didn’t believe Rooney could fill their shoes by playing up front on his own and taking the goalscoring burden.

But he has and I would have Rooney all day long as my lead striker for the World Cup.

Owen Coyle deserves huge respect and praise for the outstanding job he is doing as Bolton boss since leaving Burnley.

His old club now look doomed to relegation without him, but the Trotters will surely stay up after a third win in four games.

I must admit I didn’t think Coyle would cope inheriting a Bolton side who had been indoctrinated in such a direct style of football under Gary Megson.

I didn’t think Coyle would be able to turn it around in such spectacular fashion in such a short space of time.

But I saw them at West Ham recently when Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies were such a threat up front.

And by bringing in Jack Wilshire on loan from Arsenal, I think Coyle has added some flair and imagination to the Reebok outfit.

I now think he is the man to take the club forward and am happy to hold my hands up when I am wrong.

Bolton should feel very lucky to have him.

But conversely Wigan look annoyingly inconsistent following their 4-0 stuffing at Bolton.

They have a decent manager in Roberto Martinez and some capable players.

But I think there is a streak in them where they are quite happy to play in the big games, like Liverpool who they beat last Monday, and not capable of rolling their sleeves up to dig out results.
