The two Davids will be all Gold for West Ham, plus why Arsenal should take a punt on Smalling

I was keeping my fingers crossed for West Ham fans that they would get the two Davids, Sullivan and Gold, to steward their club.

And I hope the vast majority down at Upton Park will be delighted too, now that the Hammers is back in East End hands.

A debt of £100million will be difficult to turn around quickly, but already Gold and Sullivan have identified that they need to steady the ship whilst giving the punters hope that the club can move forward.

The prospective signing of Benni McCarthy from Blackburn will add a very good striker to provide the team with some much-needed experience in their front line.

Any turnaround at Upton Park is clearly not going to happen overnight but I’m absolutely sure that in the seasons to come, West Ham can finally have Premier League stability.

Sullivan and Gold, who have paid £50million for 50 per cent of the club, are two guys who have been there and got the T-shirt with Birmingham City.

I am sure they will make it work at West Ham and good luck to them.

************

Chris Smalling has started only one Premier League game for Fulham but Arsenal are already interested in buying him.

It is incredible how much top clubs are willing to pay for potential these days.

But from what I have seen of the 20-year-old centre-back, he could be worth a gamble.

Arsenal would, of course, have to pay the over-the-odds 'British' premium to get him.

But I saw him in the recent derby game at Chelsea and, although he scored an unfortunate own goal, the lad was excellent throughout.

His positional play was good, he was comfortable on the ball and, as you have to be in the world’s toughest league, he is a real athlete.

So my message to Arsene Wenger would be to stick him alongside the new breed of Gunners’ kids over the next three years and watch him grow into a full England international.
