The constant loop of average managers like Gordon Strachan getting all the jobs really depresses me

Gordon Strachan is set to return to management today at Middlesbrough but I remain unconvinced at the Scot’s ability in the dug-out.

Strachan seems to be one of a pool of managers whose names are always linked with jobs and who never struggles for work but I am not sure why.

This after all is the man who got Coventry City relegated from the top-flight before having modest success at Southampton.

And while people point to his reign at Celtic as a triumph, it is a two-horse race north of the border.

I get so concerned when it is always Strachan, Alan Curbishley and Glenn Hoddle being mentioned for the same vacant jobs.

I still remember my old Nottingham Forest striker partner Bryan Roy telling me that English coaching is the laughing stock of Europe.

And I think it is a great shame if more and more young coaches like Gareth Southgate are potentially lost to the profession.

I like Southgate and reckon he would have got it right eventually at Boro but he got his marching orders.

The constant loop of managers, who have average aims and average ambitions, lining up to replace him really depresses me.

That’s why I really want to see men such as Paul Ince, Southgate, Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer succeed in management.
