Why Chelsea are Cinderella in the Premier League panto

Christmas traditionally heralds the start of panto – but the start of the Premier League next weekend means that theatre and drama have arrived ahead of schedule.

The PL resembles one of the best known pantomime titles Cinderella, where the principal characters are:

Cinderella - Chelsea
The word Cinderella can mean one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity or neglect (enter Roman Abramovich, stage left).

Buttons - Man United
Last season in particular, Sir Alex Ferguson’s United had to play second fiddle to Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

The Ugly Sisters - Arsenal & Man City
So much make-up and bling yet not pretty enough to take centre stage.

Baron Hardup - Liverpool
Skint and living on past glories and memories, Roy Hodgson’s club needs Fernando Torres to be a dashing Prince Charming.

Fairy Godmother - Sky
Rupert Murdoch’s company has certainly turned the Premier League into something magical – but has cast a wicked spell on the England team as a result.

CinderePLa, a new 10-month pantomime, is opening at a theatre near you next weekend.
