Why England face some tricky games in Euro 2012 but I'm backing them to qualify
After another draw that was like watching paint dry, England came out last of all but, thankfully, avoided the traditional Group of Death.
On paper, Fabio Capello must be happy with the opposition, but we said the same in South Africa for the World Cup last year.
France have beaten us in the last five matches – 1982 was the last time we overcame them in a competitive match.
This opening game could well be tricky — and the other two – against Sweden and Ukraine respectively – are not easy either.
The co-hosts actually defeated Capello’s side in qualification for South Africa but it is Erik Hamren’s Sweden that will once more provide tough opposition, both mentally and physically.
Forget that Wembley win last month, Sweden will relish the chance to inflict more tournament agony on England — it’s what they do!
Providing Capello gets the preparation right for once, England should qualify, but it would have been far more comfortable having Wayne Rooney available.
I just hope our paint doesn’t run dry before England’s best chance returns.
PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT (DAVID SILVA, SPAIN)
I really like his style, passing and tactical awareness. His movement is extraordinary and he consistently finds space in any crowded midfield and congested penalty area. He is hard to mark and because he is so small he is often ignored – but at your peril!
REVELATION OF THE TOURNAMENT (DANIEL STURRIDGE, ENGLAND)
This player really excites me in that he has terrific pace; an excellent touch and can also pick out a pass for his colleagues to score. Unselfish and with great vision, Sturridge should go to Poland as he has far more to give than Downing and Johnson.
AND FINALLY…
I don’t think Capello will actually do it, but why not select a really young squad and leave a fantastic legacy for 2014? We have always failed with experience – now give youth a chance!
