Emmanuel Adebayor opens new Arsenal rift after claiming he DID apologise to Robin van Persie
There’s been a dignified silence from the Arsenal dressing room in the wake of Emmanuel Adebayor’s latest allegation.
The Manchester City striker gave an interview to CNN International in which he revisited his infamous spat against his old club, when he kicked Robin van Persie in the face and sprinted 90 yards to celebrate a goal in front of the Arsenal supporters.
It wasn’t the fact that he compared himself with Barack Obama that sparked surprise in the Gunners’ camp.
It was Adebayor’s claim that “I saw Robin in the tunnel and told him, ‘I’m very sorry for what happened’. At the time he told me, ‘OK, it’s fine’.”
The new Adebayor version of events completely contradicts Van Persie’s angry outburst immediately after the incident.
A fortnight later, when the Dutch striker had calmed down, he revealed: “I’ve not had a personal apology and I do not expect one any more.”
Arsenal players don’t want to get dragged into a war of words with their old team-mate.
But things could get a bit lively when the £25million Togo striker returns to The Emirates on April 24.
