Hamann: Joe Cole signing for Liverpool is "probably the best bit of news for the club in the last 10 years”

Champions League winner Didi Hamann has backed Joe Cole to bring the glory days back to Liverpool.

The German reckons luring Cole to Anfield is the club’s biggest coup in a decade – and it will transform Roy Hodgson’s under-achievers into challengers once again.

Hamann said: “If you had asked me two weeks ago I would have said doom and gloom but the arrival of Joe Cole has made a hell of a difference.

“For a London boy to go up north, which hasn’t really happened in the last few years, and to turn down Spurs, Arsenal, maybe Real Madrid to go to Liverpool sends a massive statement out to the rest of the league.”

Hamann, 36, back in England as player-coach with MK Dons, added: “It’s probably the best bit of news for the club in the last 10 years.”
