That is likely to be followed by a move for Bolton's England centre half Gary Cahill and they still want Blackburn's Chris Samba.
Arsenal do not want to pay the £17m buy-out clause in Cahill's contract but the deal could get the go-ahead with a player-plus-cash deal.
That could involve young midfielder Hanri Lansbury on a permanent basis and also Spanish youngster Ignasi Miquel on a season-long loan deal.
Samba is still on Arsenal's wish list but they must offload Sebastien Squillaci while Blackburn want in excess of £12m because of an expensive sell-on clause with is former club Hertha Berlin.
Arsenal are also interested in Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon - who has one year left on his contract - and would be seen as back-up and competition to Wojciech Szczesny. But again they want to offload first with Manuel Almunia and Vito Mannone available.
