Arsenal have stepped up their search for a top-class striker with an enquiry for former Tottenham target Leandro Damiao.
Italian giants Juventus have tracked Internacional’s Brazil forward all year and are hoping to finalise a deal for next summer.
But Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has now expressed an interest in signing the 22-year-old in the looming January window.
The Mirror exclusively reported earlier this week that Wenger is ready to break the club’s transfer record to land Borussia Dortmund forward Mario Gotze , and also that they are tracking Cologne and Germany striker Lukas Podolski .
And this back-up move for Damiao demonstrates how Wenger determined is to strengthen his squad – and prove to captain Robin van Persie, who is out of contract at the end of next season, that Arsenal are capable of attracting top players.
Damiao’s agent, Vinicius Prates, was in Turin, where Juventus are based, this week after previously visiting Barcelona, but he has also spoken to Arsenal.
Tottenham failed to meet the player’s £15million asking price in the summer, and Internacional now want £25m for the English-style hitman, who has scored 31 goals in domestic football this year.
