Aston Villa are the latest Premier League club offering free agent Owen Hargreaves a career lifeline.
Former England midfielder Hargreaves, 30, is searching for a new club having been released by Manchester United after an injury nightmare.
But the star insists he is over his knee problems and has contract offers from West Brom and Championship Leicester.
Now Villa boss Alex McLeish has emerged as a contender for Hargreaves' signature.
McLeish is trying to wheel and deal before the transfer window shuts as he has limited resources.
Right-back Luke Young, on £40,000-a-week, has gone to QPR with Tottenham's Alan Hutton in line to replace him.
McLeish is also trying to move on flop Jean Makoun to bring in a new midfielder with Hargreaves now a target as Scott Parker is off to Spurs.
A Villa source said: "A few things could happen before the window shuts."
Mirrorsport revealed last week Villa have given agents mandates to move on Young, Habib Beye, Makoun, Shane Lowry and Carlos Cuellar.
